Studying? What's That?

Urrgh.... Finals.... creeping up on me.... Must study. Must start to study. Aargh!

Ack, I'm so tired. And I haven't even been doing anything useful. Moo. At least I have clementines. ^_^ Well, we got our re-election forms in.... Doesn't look like there'll be any competition - easy peasy! Maybe we'll actually get something done on the dorm website during IAP. IAP.... *sighs* Wow, I'm going to be spending a whole month doing nothing but math. Joy. Didn't get a mentorship, so thus far, there's nothing to break the monotony. Well, the Anime Club wants to change the Independent Activities Period into the Intensive Anime Period, so that sounds promising... :D

LSC is showing The Fellowship of the Ring on Friday so everyone can rewatch it in preperation for The Two Towers. Since a ticket's only $3, it sounds like a good deal, but... it's shown in my math lecture hall - hard wooden seats! For three hours, no less! Heh, I still think I'll go. ^_^ Speaking of LOTR movies, Random Hall has a big billboard advertising the Two Towers right outside on top of the building next door to them. That must be pretty exciting... Why don't they stick something like that on top of our dorm?! Hahaha...

Hmm.... Bed at midnight? Does that sound feasible? (Yes.) Does it ever happen? (No.) *dies*

Back From the Dead, for a Little While at Least

Wow, the past week was really busy. I had yet another awful psych paper to write - thank goodness that's over! My, well, this looks like a nice quiet week ahead of me... the calm before the storm. Urgh, finals the week after this! I'm so scared. Must study titrations!!

My Saturday was probably the best one I've had recently. There was a dorm brunch in the morning with really good food (clementines!) and we got a lot of people to sign our candidacy petition - Amy, Janet and I have to re-run for dorm webmistresses. I just spent quite a while coloring in a picture of us - not much point to it though, since we seem to be running unopposed. Actually, I don't think that there's any competition for any office. I guess people don't have enough time... and that there's just so many offices to fill! Well, I'm doing my part. ^_^ Yaar, so anyway, after the brunch, Amy and I walked over to the Prudential Center to do a little (window) shopping. Amy got some really cute wooden fruit for her mother. They are really nice. I sure hope she likes them. At night, two sororities hosted a Free Skate - ice skating for free! So we went, and it was great! They served cheesecake and hot chocolate, and I got to ice skating for the first time in a really long time. I miss ice skating. Even though I'm not very good at it (not by a long shot!) I really enjoy it... Amy's never skated before; fortunately, she got some friends to help her out. I feel so ashamed - I couldn't show her at all - I don't even remember how I learned to skate, it was so long ago! Amy complains of being really sore today from falling down, and David keeps making fun of her. I think he needs to shut up - falling down does hurt! He was too late to get a pair of skates that fit, so he didn't go skating. He should have... then he wouldn't be so annoying today. :P Nah, he'd probably be whining very loudly to anyone who'd listen.

So after skating, Vivian and I went to the Toons concert. It was really good! Heh, they did a skit entitled 'The 8 Mile Fellowship' which featured Frodo having a rap-off against Sauron. It was really funny - Sauron was awesome. Frodo, on the other hand, was pathetic. So... evil triumphs!! ^^ After that, there was a party hosted for the McCormick frosh so I got to hang out with Janet, who's been sick for the past few days (and she sprained her ankle too!). Mrr, I hope she gets better soon, and stays healthy too!

The Last Mad Dash to... Finals?

Well, Thanksgiving break was really nice... Didn't get too much accomplished, but it was really nice to be home again. Didn't get to see all the people I wanted to, didn't get all the homework done that I wanted to, but I burned plenty of CDs! Whew, it's so nice to have space on my computer again. No more heavy downloading for a while! Heh, well, we'll see how it goes... ^_~

My family bought a Chirstmas tree today - I helped string up lights on it. Not too much decorating for me this year, I fear. Hrm, things are going to go a bit differently this year. I can't believe that Christmas is approaching so quickly. Great. Christmas shopping. Aargh. Time, time, I have no time for something like that! Rargh... *beats herself over the head with her physics book*

I can't believe it - there's only three more weeks until finals start. It's scary... The end of the semester is coming up really fast. I have to figure out what courses I'm going to take, what major I'm going to declare, dealing with the fact that I'll be on grades next semester, etc. Aah! Physics 2! This is not going to be fun at all... x_X Oy, well, I've got all four of my finals squashed into three days - the only good thing about it is that I can go home that much sooner. No fair for the people taking 3.091 - Concourse chem. They don't have a final. So evil!! Almost makes me wish I hadn't switched out of that class. Almost.

So, once more it's a Sunday night and I'm staring at the mound of work in front of me... Math p-set, fizzicks test, psychology paper, chem p-set. Loads of fun, oh yes. Gads, where do I start?

Still Adjusting to College Life... MIT Life... No Life

Mmmf. I've been so busy this week that I haven't had time to write at all. Had a chem test on Wednesday, evil evil math last night, you know how it goes... Got the chem test back today... Got a 65. Which sadly, wasn't such a bad grade - the average was a 61. So, hey, I'm above average for once. x_x This is so sad... Major scale-age, anyone? I am actually pretty happy with my score, which is sad. I figure, if I had known how to do titrations, I would have done REALLY well. Hrmph. We've been promised more titration problems on the final. I'd better get really good at doing those so that my mind doesn't go blank when I see a problem mixing acids and bases together.

Tonight I went to a chemistry forum - the purpose of it is to let the professors and students mingle a bit, and let the professors get some feedback. I was one of 3 students who showed up... such a small crowd! Professor Drennan was very nice though, and we talked about how to improve the class and stuff. It was pretty interesting. Plus, there was free food! I took a whole pizza back for Amy and David and me to munch on since there was so much left over. Better than leaving it for random grad students. :P It was amusing to walk back through the school, carrying the pizza box and looking like a delivery girl or something. Hehehe... It is fun to make people wonder...

Oh, so earlier today, I saw the coolest thing ever. Class was over, so I was heading back home, and as I was walking by a doorway, this guy rollerbladed in. He stopped himself on a nearby table, and yanked a lever thing on one rollerblade, and a bar with wheels attached came off. Same thing to the other foot, and off he walks in his tennis shoes, carrying his wheel attachments. Wow. So totally cool. I want a pair of attachable wheels to stick on my shoes and skate back and forth from class! Aaaagggghhhh! Sooooo cool! Of course, this being MIT, I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised... He probably made them himself. Still, I am very impressed. Better than dragging your rollerblades around everywhere. ^_^

Hnn.... Today is just full of good news... I also got my psychology paper #3 - it was a rewrite of #2. I got 10/10 on it!! I'm so happy! I didn't think the paper was awesome, but I was sure it was an improvement over the old one. I guess my TA thought so too. So yay! I'm so happy! Yeah! No more work to do tonight! A friend commissioned me to draw the Slyffindor quidditch team (a cross between Gryffindor and Slytherin) She's the seeker, and I'm in there somewhere... I guess I'm a chaser. Certainly not a beater. ^^; Aaah.... It's so nice that tonight has not been stressful at all. So, with that said, I'm going to go to bed right now and get more than 6 hours of sleep for once. ^___^

The Joys of Being a Lowly Server...

This is shaping up to be a terrific weekend. I got to see Harry Potter last night (yeah!!!) and so I was all happy and thought today would be dull or something. And it was, mostly, since I was trying to do work as usual (and getting nothing done, as usual) when David and Amy invited me to go along and serve food at the BITSA banquet. BITSA is the Boston Intercollegiate Taiwanese Student Association and they had a conference today. We even hosted a visiting student in our room - she's really nice. So anyway, I guess Amy and David had somehow gotten recruited to serve food for all the people. And they needed more people, so I got sucked into the whole deal as well. It was a good thing though. ^_^ I ended up serving lots of Chinese food... Some people were rude, sheesh! But afterwards, we got leftovers for free! Woo hoo! Chinese food! Chopsticks! Oh yeah!!! Gaaaah, I have been so Chinese-food-deprived recently. This was great because I got dinner and a performance for free. Better than paying $8 for the same! So, uh huh, I am happy now. Time for homework!

Harry Potter Strikes Again!

Yaaay! I saw Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets today! Yah, it was really good! Of course, the book was better, but that's always the case. Almost every boy's voice has changed in this movie... It's disconcerting. And goodness, they make the movie so dark! It's quite interesting. Still, I won't say any more because I'm sure other people want to see it for theirselves. It was good... but what I'm really waiting for is Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. That movie's going to be awesome! A trailer was played for it before today's movie, and when it started, everyone in the theater started clapping. It was really funny. Ah! I can't wait!

I am coloring a picture of Tsukasa for my door right now. Geez, it's so annoying. All of his clothing is some shade of brown/gray and I can't get any of the shades right. It's very annoying. I've done better. Oh well, it's better than nothing. ^^ I wonder what I should draw next... Aargh, I want a scanner and a good color printer. I would so color everything on the computer. It looks so much more professional! Hahaha... I was so quickly converted to computer coloring by the copy of PhotoDeluxe that I installed on here. It does a good job. ^_^ Grr! No one has a scanner! It's so depressing. Guess I'm out of luck until I go home...

Today was a good day. Not only did I get to see Harry Potter, but Nate also dropped by... He and his friend Adam were in the area, I'm not sure why, so they decided to pay me a visit. It was really nice to see him again - especially since I haven't met up with anyone else here besides Jolanta so far! Huh... I miss all my friends. We're all scattered all over the place. It's sort of sad. Well, I might be able to do something with Julie this weekend... Not sure, since she's at an orchestra party right now. ^^ So this weekend's looking pretty good, even though I have to start studying for yet another chem test. Aargh! It never ends! Well, such is life here. ^_~

Some People...

Ack! I'm not done with my math p-set yet, and it's due in just a few hours! :P Cycloids are very very evil. Stay far away from them if you know what's good for you. Oh well, at least I'm all caught up on Harry Potter (random, I know, but at least I know what the movie's going to be about!). Raar... I'll be up all night tomorrow (tonight - eek!) doing chem. Life is fun, isn't it? Anyway, here's an amusing conversation I overheard today on the way back to my dorm:

Guy1: So how's crew?
Guy2: Crew?
Guy1: Yeah, crew practice.
Guy2: Oh! 6:45 every day!
Guy1: 6:45?
Guy2: 6:45 in the morning.
Guy1: Wow. How do you deal with that?
Guy2: Three alarm clocks.

Hmm... Highlight of the day: Going to jiu jitsu and watching the instructor cause pain. And then trying to copy him and cause pain on other people. It's quite interesting really. Fun fun. Better than p-sets. Which I have to do now. X_x;

Bed and Books

I am going to bed early tonight! Yes... Before 2 am! I'm so excited. :P *falls asleep at desk and topples over*

Well, enjoyed another long weekend by not doing too much. I dragged Amy and David along to the Cambridge Public Library. It's practically at Harvard - bit of a hike. Still, it's a very nice library. Surprisingly large inside and very old. It's interesting - there's four floors devoted to fiction and nonfiction. But I didn't hang out there too long - I was looking for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (coming out this Friday and we got tickets!!!). So I hung out in the Sci-fi/Fantasy section. Wow, it is so much better than the library back at home! There's a really good selection, and they're rather up-to-date as well. The coolest thing was to see a graphic novel section... with ElfQuest! Wai! I haven't seen one of those books since, uh, 9th grade, I think. Too bad the earliest one I could find was book 6, since I have only read the first one (it was really well done). There's a lot of good books there. I forsee myself going back often... unless I find out that MIT has a good fantasy section somewhere. I haven't checked yet, but I probably should. 'Twould be a whole lot faster than walking to the Cambridge Library - it's about half an hour each way on foot. Oh well... That's an experiment that'll have to wait, since I'm going to sleep RIGHT NOW! Mwahahaha..... ^_^

Where Does all the Time Go?

*sighs* Weekends are great. But they always come to an end. And of course, they seem to pass by so much faster than the rest of the week. Ah, somehow I never seem to get any work done over these fleeting moments of freedom. Whenever I crack a book open, I soon turn away from it to do something else. It's horrible. Did I use to be like this? I don't really think so... Why can't I do work anymore?! It would be so incredible if I say, finished all my math homework so that I wouldn't have to do it the night before it's due? Well, I tried that today... didn't even come close. Where does all the time go to?

Hrmph. It all goes into drawing, I think. I haven't had enough time for it lately, so my creativity came to a head, and I have to let it all out. Hopefully, once it subsides, I can get some work done. ^_^ It's so sad not to have as much time to draw as I used to. It's so funny - i haven't even doodled for the first two months of school - all my notes are so clean. And then, all of a sudden, pictures start appearing. You can't keep a good doodler down! :P Of course, they are all of Tsukasa because his outfit rocks! So I have little Tsukasas drawn everywhere. I even drew a larger one for my door (finally!). Still have to color it though. No worries... it'll be done. Probably before I finish my math homework. ^^;

I Hate Email

Woohoo! I don't have an 'I hate MIT' rant today! Except I have a chem p-set due tomorrow that I haven't really started. But... if I don't think about that right now... I can happy!

Yeah, my math test went well today, I think. I know I screwed up big time on the first question because I accidentally used the wrong coordinates (Ack! So stupid of me!) But otherwise, I felt that I pretty much understood most of the material, which is a first. And I didn't get any fail mail, so I guess I must be safe! Unless they haven't graded mine yet... o_o; No, must not think negative thoughts!

Arrgh, so today I went to check my Hotmail account. Of course, all I get is junk mail, but I'm an overly optimistic person so I go look anyway. Well, lo and behold, all there was was junk mail. And one of those stupid announcement thingies that MSN sends out to everyone to try to get them to pay money (for rotten service, I'm sure). Because I was desperate, or stupid, whichever you prefer, I decided to actually read the announcement for once. And the first line was, "Like a cold, nothing spreads faster than a computer virus." Gaad, how lame. DUH!! Why do you think they call viruses viruses?! I don't really know why I am so peeved, but that sentence just strikes me as unbelieveably stupid. Sorry MSN, no money for you. Like you were going to get any from me anyway.

I never thought that my MIT email address would be so popular. Somehow, everybody sends me stuff that's meant for someone named Lisa Briggs. How awful! She doesn't sound like a student - she gets all these reports from people in labs and stuff. So... she must be new here or something. I mean, she has her own email addy, and if she isn't new, then she's probably had it for a while. So why does everyone send stuff to me - a freshman?! Haven't they figured out her email address already?! And if not, then it's really really easy to look up anyone's email addy on MITnet just by putting in their first and last name. Can't anyone spare two seconds to make sure they aren't sending suspiciously attached files to a random freshman? Does anyone think about how annoying it is to get random mail from random people? Heh, it'd be funny if it were confidential material. Maybe I should start collecting it... Darn, I knew I should have signed up for labrat@mit.edu. x_x

We Love Cooking... But We Don't Love Physics Tests At All!

Nooo.... I don't understand physics at all. So bad. This time I really WILL fail my physics test. Aargh... *dies* Hahaha... Please excuse me as I rant yet again about how much my life sucks.

On a cheerier note (not really), I think that college students need four meals a day. I am not used to being up this late. I mean, I ate hours ago - at perhaps 6:30ish today... and looking at the clock, that was seven hours ago. A long long time. I need more food. Rather, I need to go to sleep earlier so that I don't get hungry at night. Or, I could just horde food in my room. ^^ Of course, it would be better if I actually had something other than cookies on my desk. This is not good...

Well, since I'm on the topic of food, I just remembered that I have to cook for friends on Friday. Now, unfortunately, the only thing I can cook is paella. Not that that's a bad thing, mind you, but it does somewhat limit me. Plus, I'm used to cooking up a lot, in a really really big pan. And do I have a big pan? Oh no, of course not. Hmm, this could present a problem, especially since I have no idea who's coming at this point in time. I'm hoping to be able to cut the amounts in half, and not create a week's worth of food at once. There's lots of ingredients in it... Just thinking of how much this is going to cost me in groceries is frightening. Great. That begs the question - once I buy the groceries, how am I going to get them home? Aaargh... This is starting to sound more and more dismal. Ha, watch no one come, and I'm stuck with all this food... Well, that's plenty of free meals right there. Hrm, I should probably make multiple trips to the store - buy a little bit each day. ^_^ Darn that ten minute walk to the grocery store!

Gaah... I wish it were this easy to type up psych papers. I'd be done in five minutes.

*gnashes teeth and glares at computer* "You can download .hack//SIGN episdoes faster than that, you stupid thing!" *beats the poor machine senseless* Ha, well that was fun. But the studybreak is over now. Back to work. NO! No more failure! Aargh. Having a math test on Thursday does not help my mood at all. x_x

Sweet dreams, kiddies.

Flykyr's Brain is Tired

Need sleep... This psych paper is evil... as usual. I think I may be almost finished, which is nice, but it's still a page too short. x_x Grr. It's a problem for tomorrow! Or rather, later on today. Hmm... Someday I will go to sleep at midnight, just for fun. I wonder if it would even be possible... *ponders and becomes very sad*

So... news of the day... Math recitation was interesting. Last Friday, in math lecture, some students had written things about our prof on the blackboards that are hidden below the chalk tray (they slide back behind the wall and can be pulled up when needed). Our prof pulled up one of the boards while writing and it said 'Prof. Mattuck rules!' We were all very amused. It was even better though because the other two boards (there's three panels in the massive blackboard at the front of the lecture hall) had similar things written on them. It was a nice stress-reliever sort of thing to break up the lecture. Well, anyway, today, our math TA was late... as usual. His name is Jerry and he's always late because he teaches a class right before he comes and does recitation with us. Anyway, people decided to write stuff on the board for him to be amused by. Tim wrote a good one: "MATTUCK IS GOD. JERRY IS HIS PROPHET." The funny thing was that Jerry didn't notice for the first five or ten minutes of class even though it was smack dab in the center of the chalkboard. Jerry has tunnel vision or something... Well, it was funny, because he finally saw it and said, "Um, right." Then he left it up for a while. I wonder if he was flattered... Oh yeah, another funny/strange thing happened in today's recitation. There's all sorts of way to show that a letter represents a vector. Most commonly, you draw an arrow over the letter. Another way that's commonly used in textbooks is to put the letter in boldface type. Jerry's way of putting chalkboard letters into bold-face type is to make it look like a roman numeral - he puts lines on the top and the bottom of the letter. So he was using X today, and when he added the lines, he made it look like an hourglass. He'd never done that before - he usually uses the little arrows, but, I don't know. He was being weird today or something. Anyway, we asked him what it was, and he explained. When he finished, this kid calls out, "It looks like a chocolate chip cookie!" We stare at him for a second or two, and then all yell, "WHAT?!" after which he was suitably embarrassed and refused to reveal what had been going through his mind at that point in time. Ahahahaha... People are amusing.

My brain is melting down or something. Either that, or I just have bad nightvision, which is probably the more reasonable explanation, or at least I'd prefer to think so since the thought of melting brains is just plain gross. Eww... I'll stop talking about that right now. Anyway, I had an unpleasant reminder that I live in a city, and cities are quite... different from small towns, especially where vermin are concerned. So I was walking along to my gym class (jiu jitsu!) and I saw something moving under a bush. I got closer, and I was thinking, 'Geez, it's awfully late for a squirrel to be out at night.' I swear, this critter was nearly the size of the gray squirrels that hang out near MIT's sporadic oak trees. I got closer, and then started thinking, 'Wait... What happened to its tail? It's so small and not fluffy-looking at all.' Then, a step or two later, 'Oh my goodness. It's a rat?!' The rat stares at me with this 'Is she going to feed me or not' sort of expression on its face before fading into the underbrush. Aaah! Big brown rats right in the middle of campus! Right across from my dorm! Ew! One thing's for sure... we're not in Londonderry anymore, Flykyr. Yes, this IS a city. And I am painfully aware of that fact. So... yeah. What kind of squirrel would be out at night anyway?

A side note of squirrels: They are really stupid. These oak trees drop acorns like mad (and try to kill people, as I've mentioned before) and there are acorns EVERYWHERE! So where are the squirrels? Good question - they must have gone on vacation or something. So the other day these groundskeepers went and raked up all the leaves that get all over the place from the trees. And guess what else they rake up? Yep, you got it - acorns. So now there are no acorns on the ground. And, oh, smartness! Today, I see a forlorn squirrel wandering about on the ground and eagerly pouncing on the one acorn on the ground. This is so sad... Makes me think of myself actually. I'd be stupid enough to do something like that. Someone remind me why I'm at MIT again? :P

Hmph. Yet another unproductive weekend. And it's been so pretty too. I should go out and do something... Except I have to write my psychology paper! Aaaghhh! Why are psych papers always due right after a fabulous weekend? Figures.... -_-; Gaah, I hate research!

Hahaha... I didn't go to anime club this week (again). Turns out that I can have a much more enjoyable time watching my own stuff than what they dish out. *shrugs* Plus, they were having a cosplay contest this week in honor of Halloween. Now, cosplay just scares me... people aren't meant to go and look like their favorite anime characters. *shudders* Still, a small part of me is curious as to how it turned out... No no no, let's not go there.

So, on the topic of anime... Um, my computer is running out of space. Again. Maybe I should invest in a cd burner, or something. Or go home more often. ^^ Sheesh. It's amazing at how quickly those episodes pile up and eat up all my space... *growls and pulls out alternate harddrive again, sees that it's full, and angrily tosses it back in its drawer* Hmm... So what am I currently watching right now? *blinks* Well, I've been watching Record of Lodoss War. Too bad it's in English. Dubs are so awful. I guess this one isn't too bad, but English voice actors can never put in enough emotion. Utterly unconvincing. -_-; Heh, I find that I'm just watching it for Deedlit - pointy ears are fun, and hers are huge! I am vastly amused... she could probably put out someone's eye just by turning her head at the wrong time. Okay, well besides that, I've also started watching a bit of Rurouni Kenshin - very interesting, but Kenshin's voice disturbs me. Gaah, he almost sounds like a girl. And the fact that he wears pink doesn't help one bit. Nrr... He has fun hair. That gets me every time. Anime hair rules. ^^ So... I have many many Trigun episodes that I haven't watched yet, although I HAVE seen the whole series before, so that's not a top priority. I also have a lot of Cowboy Bebop eps as well. That's another western-space type anime - it has really good music. Hmm... I was keeping up on Excel Saga as well, but now I'm a bit behind on that as well... Need more time. :P And I still have Final Fantasy Unlimited episodes to get through - there isn't enough time to watch everything! FFU is disturbingly amusing. Well, what can you expect... it's made by the same people who have produced video game after video game, so I guess the really bizarre monsters are to be expected. The mixture of computer animation and cel animation is interesting, but not entirely convincing. Plus, I don't really like the animation style - it's too simple, and there's practically no shading. Not pretty enough for me. x_x Hahaha.... Looking back on this, I suppose I have no excuse to wonder why there's no space on my computer.

Well, okay. The real reason that I started talking about anime was so that I can talk about what I'm currently hooked on. ^^ So... yeah, .hack//SIGN is my new favorite anime. Aaah! It's soooo cool! Not only is it beautifully drawn, but there's computer animation mixed in with it, like FFU, only the makers did a much better job on it. I've been very impressed - the storyline is interesting, and the music is incredible. Plus, the main character rules. Tsukasa is a young sorcerer who is trapped in The World - an online roleplaying game (like EverQuest). And really weird things start going on, centering around him.... Hmm, it's very interesting. I like it a lot. Especially Tsukasa. :P Heh... he has the greatest outfit ever. I want it! And he's got gray hair!! Aagh... If you know about my dark elf appreciation, then you'd know that I really really like white/gray hair. ^^; Hehehe... Funness. Of course purple hair is good too... Strangely colored hair in general is lots of fun. Oh yes, oh yes. Hmm... I'm going to shut up now because I'm starting to sound like a raving lunatic. o_o;

Happy Halloween!

Oh wait, I missed it. Darn. Why do I stay up so late?! Aargh, happy belatedness then. Well, since I just finished my chemistry and am still in a somewhat Halloweenish mood (note: hyped up on too much sugar) I will write about Halloween at MIT.

Halloween is surprisingly popular here. It is more interesting than my high school was - more than 5 people dressed up. There was a gorilla handing out party invitations out, and I saw a guy wearing a hat with wires taped on indicating i, j, and k (David should have gone and asked him 'What's up?!?!').

This morning, there were some people handing out candy on the front steps of 77 Mass. Ave. They were part of some volunteering service/department of MIT, and so they were all in costume and giving out flyers and candy. And the coolest (scariest?) thing was that the school mascot Tim the Beaver was there!!

Side story about Tim the Beaver: Okay, so I knew that our mascot's name was Tim the Beaver, but I did not actually realize the significance of the name until Wednesday night. It was my first Jiu Jitsu PE class, and we were in this room with a wooden floor and mirrors on the front wall. There was this guy in the back with a MIT shirt on. But I didn't realize what it was at first because I was looking in the mirror. I was thinking, "Why does his shirt say TIM? Is he broadcasting his name or something?" And then I realized, "Oh, duh! Mirror means backwards. That's an MIT shirt." And then I realized.... Oh horrors! MIT is cheesy and sad. Not only is the volleyball team (and probably others as well) called the Engineers, but our mascot's name is our school name spelled backwards! Aagh, I am so slow to notice these things. But now I know... *evil laugh*

Anyway, enough about our buddy Tim. Since I'm thinking about 77 Mass. Ave. I guess I should mention the killer oak tree. There is this set of trees you have to walk under to get to the crosswalk - rather, to get to the whole school building. And one of these trees, I swear, is an oak tree with murderous intent. I was walking under it the other day, when an acorn fell out of the tree really fast and landed with a loud crack on the pavement near me. If that had hit me, I probably would have gotten a concussion or something. I thought it odd, and promptly forgot the strange occurrence. But today, there was a guy walking under the tree and the same thing happened to him! Luckily, the vengeful tree has bad aim and didn't hit the poor person. Still, I figure it's only a moment of time before someone is actually hit by these acorn missles. A bad business all around. I wonder why the tree is so mad in the first place... I will be careful whenever I'm over there, and walk by as quickly as possible.

I have been driven to paranoia. Someone followed me home after I bought my lunch and headed back to my room. I figure if it was a friend, they would have said something. But no, this person said nothing. They were dressed up in a costume - didn't really check what. I figured that once I got into the dorm, maybe they'd give up. But no! The desk captain let her in - obviously, since the pursuer was a girl, the desk captain didn't care. So much for security. So I took off and started climbing the stairs. And this person followed me up! Aargh! I got onto the 4th floor before the other person made it up, and I ran into my room and locked the door. I figure, if it was a friend, she would have come over and knocked on my door or something, and we could have had a good laugh about the whole affair. But no! The person never knocked. So either they didn't know who I was and was just randomly stalking me, or it was a friend with a really demented sense of humor. So now I have decided that I don't like Halloween. Hopefully that will never happen again. I am easily creeped out. Plus, I am a major wimp. Next time, perhaps I should try a confrontation? Hmm.... I am not an aggressive enough person. X_x

- Flykyr Skysong

Rumor of the day: Someone heard that on Halloween you can't buy eggs from any local grocery stores unless you're 30 or over, and you need an i.d. to get any. Can you imagine - being carded for eggs?! What if you had to cook for dinner and needed eggs and were too young? Hahaha... We love rumors. ^_^

And tonight's topic is.... webradio! Simply because I am listening to it right now, and feel like talking about it instead of my unfinished math homework. :P

Webradio is, in a word, cool. Seriously! There is so much more variety available online because you aren't limited to the radio stations within broadcasting range. Provided that you have high-speed internet of some sort, you can stream music off the internet, and still use your computer at the same time. Believe me, dialup just doesn't cut it. Still, if you are a lucky college student (like me) internet speed is not a problem. So, I use this website - live365.com - and I can easily search for radio stations in all sorts of different categories, including stuff you won't find on mainstream radio like celtic and anime stations. This is really really nice considering that the only radio stations I can receive on my radio are Kiss 108 and Jammin' 94.5... In other words, a station that plays the same five songs over and over, three of which are hiphop, and another station that plays the same five songs over and over, all of which are hiphop. I guess I could fiddle with my antenna to try to receive Mix 98.5, but why would I, when I have crystal-clear webradio coming in right off my laptop?

So yes, I can enjoy all sorts of different anime stations, celtic, new age, insane European stuff, etc. which you would NEVER EVER hear on your standard radio. I have even found stations dedicated to broadcasting video game music. ^_^ Even commercial-wise, webradio is vastly superior. Take Kiss 108 for instance - they play 50 minutes of music (or so they say... it's a total lie, really), and then proceed to cycle through 10 minutes of commercials. Often they are not even inventive at all and play the same commerical more than once in a single commercial break. On live365.com, there are commercials, but they come one at a time, and only every half-dozen songs or so - rather infrequently. You can even pay to have no commercials at all, which is nice, if you have money to spend, and are really desperate.

Well, now that I've extolled all of webradio's virtues, it's time to mention the downfalls. First of all, many stations are run by private individuals - they set up a playlist and just let it cycle through. Some are very short, and so are very repetitive after a while (read: my fave anime station). For more mainstream genres, this is not such an issue, but it does get rather tedious when I hear the same Gundam Wing song every day at the same time. There are timer-counter things on each radio station choice which supposedly show how many hours of playing time the music on that station takes up, but obviously, some people lie. They probably load up their playlist ten times or something, to make it look like there's more music than there actually is. Another thing is the nature of the advertisements - rather, one advertisement in particular. Aargh!! Just thinking of it makes me mad. Okay, there's this guy talking about a new song by Prodigy called 'Baby's got a Temper' and how it's been banned off radio airwaves and television for being too controversial. Boy, this group must be paying live365.com a lot, because this commercial is played *constantly*. The announcer makes it sound like cool people should watch the music video because it's been forbidden in public, and you are so not cool if you don't go and watch it too. Aargh! I hate his smirky smug voice! I DON'T CARE! I DON'T WANT TO LISTEN TO IT OR WATCH IT OR ANYTHING! JUST SHUT UP AND LEAVE ME ALONE!!!

*pant pants* Okay, well, you can see that although there are fewer commercials, it doesn't mean that they are any more bearable than normal ones (nyaar, they can be even worse). And now that I'm all riled up, I will try to go to sleep. Goodness knows I need it. I missed my first class today - slept right through it. Oy, now wasn't that a nasty surprise? I sure hope that doesn't happen again. *turns up alarm volume on clock*

Hmm.... Today was an attempt to catch on physics. Boy, did that not work. I don't understand anything at all. -_-; I need tutorring, but there isn't any until Tuesday, so boo-hoo for me.

Well, we had our first snow a few days ago - the 23rd, I think. Amy and David and all the people from the south were really excited, even though the snow was very light and was interspersed with rain. They'd better get used to snow... they'll probably be sick of it by February. :P Ach, I'll bet there is no such thing as a snow day at MIT seeing as the school building is practically across the street from me. ^_~

I tagged along with some fellow dormmates last night to frat parties - Theta Chi and Sigma Chi, right next door to each other. Talk about room for confusion there! Theta Chi was scary because it was some alumni reunion thing there, and everyone had beer, and I was scared. Needless to say, we didn't stay there for very long. Sigma Chi was scary too because there was LOTS of alcohol and people dressed in horrible, scary outfits. It makes me glad that people like to turn the lights off for parties - I'm sure that it's so you can't really get a good look at anyone else and you don't get as freaked out by how scary everyone is. *sighs* I don't understand parties. All you do is go dance, talk to people, and get drunk. I don't like to dance, I'm horrible at meeting people, and I most certainly don't drink. So there's nothing in it for me. Oh well, I can say I went and survived. And I got to play pool, which I guess is something, though I was quite horrible.... I need practice - badly. Nyah, so that was nice. Plus, the walk across the bridge was nice - it had stopped raining by then, and it wasn't too too cold yet. Someone has repainted the Smoot markers black and orange for Halloween. ^^ For those of you who don't know what Smoots are and what they have to do with the Harvard Bridge, here is the story:

Once upon a time, in 1959, there were some drunk fraternity guys. (Not too unusual around here, I'm sure). Now, they were MIT students, and geez, I don't remember the story at all so this is going to sound really horrible, but anyways, there was this young man named Oliver Smoot, who was a new pledge to their frat. These drunken students decided that it would be fun if they measured the length of the Harvard Bridge, using Smoot as their measuring stick. So they did. They laid him head to toe along the whole length of the bridge, and discovered that the bridge was exactly 364.4 Smoots plus one ear long. So now that frat goes out and repaints all the Smoot measurements on the bridge. ^^ So if you're ever walking across the Harvard Bridge, you'll know what all the numbers stand for. Leave it to MIT students. :P

Actually, my favorite part of the bridge is halfway across. Now, this really only works if you're actually headed toward MIT and not Boston, but someone painted 'Halfway to Hell' with an arrow pointing towards MIT. That just cracks me up. :P

Heh, as a random somewhat funny, somewhat strange story...... Today in physics recitation, the TA was talking about rotational stuff (fun fun) and I was busy doodling all over my papers because I was bored. The guy sitting next to me obviously glanced over and saw what I was doing, so he said, "I like your doodles." Now, as I was drawing dragons and they are commonly confused with lizards and dinosaurs, I thought he had said, "I like your turtles." I was about to be very insulted, when I figured it out (thank goodness!) Yeah, that's it. Oh well back to work...

- Flykyr Skysong

Currently listening to: Amy telling David about moments of inertia and torque. Ay........
Hahahahaha! I passed 18.01a!!!! It's finally over! Argh, never mind that I didn't pass with flying colors, but.... Gaah. I will have to do better in 18.02a. We started off with vectors. Yuck.... Oh, I hope that I can get over my stupidness this time around. But... I passed, I passed, I passed! D'oh, I've never been this happy about less-than-stellar grades before.

I think my mom's finally doing stuff with email. She tried to email me saying that I had spelled Scorpion wrong in the last entry, but sent it to Dad instead. Oh well, Mom will learn with time, I'm sure. :) After all, she's a black belt now so she can do anything!!!

Heh, thinking back to the Scorpion King (which wasn't quite as horrible as I was afraid it would be) and the random idiosyncrasies that occur in action movies like that... Wouldn't it be great if, when you had been shot in the back with an arrow, you could just pull it out and go on with life? That's pretty gosh darned convenient, isn't it. It makes me very very sad. The Rock should have died. Yes. A happy ending for me! Oh well, whatever. I guess it just goes to show that the good guy is always invincible. Rrrghh.... *slight frustration* Oh well. I'm much more excited about The Two Towers. ^^ Less than 2 months!

Oh yeah. Somehow, Nate finally tracked me down. Heh, I guess he knows someone on the floor below me, who I know vaguely. I tried to locate his contact information online, but Northeastern is not nearly as willing to give out student information as MIT is. MIT is scary... You can search for students' names and find out all sorts of things about them...... o.o; Evil people out there, if you start calling me late at night, I will track you down and EAT you!

Lalala... That over with, I must now start studying for my big chemistry test tomorrow. I hope I do well! I REALLY hope I do all right! Wish me luck, everyone!

Ahhhh.... Home again. I must say, the food at school can't begin to compare to the stuff my dad cooks. Today was part of Family Weekend, so I heard all sorts of interesting speeches. It reminds me again of how cool it is to be at MIT. There's so much happening here! Wow, I so want to get involved in stuff - the trick is in getting started, I think.

I have figured out the solution to my website problem. I will move everything over onto my MIT account, since every student gets webspace. Coolness! So.... Soon I will have moved everything over and people will have to go elsewhere to look at stuff. Hmm... The next problem will lie in finding a scanner so I can scan in pictures. *ponders* Not like I've drawn that much lately. Ugh.... Bad bad bad me.

Hmph, time to go watch a movie. "The Scorpion King" sounds like it will be really stupid. It probably isn't even worth watching. Oh well. Whatever. It is Theater Night, after all.

Ugh, I just had the worst week ever, I swear. It was really short - only 3 days, but I had so much work! And 2 tests besides. Math was absolutely rotten. I blanked on several questions, so I'm hoping I passed. Really hoping. Oh, I don't want to get fail mail tonight! :( Life suxxors big time.

Haa.... Well, enough bellyaching for now. My mom's black belt promotion ceremony is on Sunday, so I have to go home and maybe I'll even get to promote her! Ah, I'm so tired. I don't want to do anything. I don't even feel motivated to go to anime club. -_-

A friend of mine got me to start doodling on oekaki boards (that Japanese for doodle/scribble). It's fun, especially since I don't have any graphics program on my comp besides Paint, which really doesn't count. So I drew Flykyr last night. Hmm.... That link will die in a few days. Aarrghh. I need to figure out how to update my own website.

Huh.... Maybe I will watch some of Record of Lodoss War. I downloaded the first 7 episodes already. ^_^ Unfotunately, they're in English, but... oh well, what are you gonna do? Funny, I always thought Deedlit was a guy. Guess I was wrong. She's very cute. Love the pointy ears. ^^

Nooooo! In trying to get my psych paper done last night, I neglected studying for my physics test. Bad idea... I'm pretty sure I failed. How frustrating!

Lol, as I scroll through all my old postings, they all seem to read the same way. First I complain about school, and then I talk about random stuff. So this post doesn't look like it's going to be any different. :P At least I've gotten the rant over with. So now... happy news!

It's a long weekend this weekend! I'm soooooo looking forward to it. My psych paper of evilness is finally handed in, so I feel like I have complete freedom. Of course, that's entirely false, since I have to read many many chapters of psychology to prepare for the midterm on Thursday (a mid-term next week?!) Oy.... Time is just flying by. I'm going home this weekend, so I can get a haircut! Yeah!! Which reminds me that I ought to figure out how I'm going to get home in the first place.... *dreams of homecooked meals* ^_^

Grr! Our room is so cold. There is no heat in the dorm. Seriously. It doesn't get turned on until Tuesday, so until then, everyone has to freeze their tushies off. Including me. Except I'm going home, to a place with heating! Nyahh! :D

Waihoo! I'm done with work, so I can actually get sleep tonight! *conks out in front of computer*

Factoid of the day: I was shocked and dismayed by MIT's volleyball team being called the Engineers. I thought it would apply to all of MIT's varsity teams. But.... it is not so! The football team is referred to as the Beavers, so... yeah! All is not lost!

I've been too busy to write recently. I have a horrible horrible psychology paper to do for tomorrow, and I'm not even halfway through! Still, I'm proud of myself for actually getting my math done at a reasonable time. If only I didn't have the paper to write, I could get some sleep! Well, next week should be a lot less stressful - especially since I get a 4 day weekend this week!

Well, I did go to Kind Richard's Faire this weekend and it was as lovely as ever. Chilly though... I was silly and left my shawl in the car. Yeah, I dressed up in my Scottish costume. It's really neat to get all dressed up and go to a Renaissance fair where everyone else is dressed up too. ^_^ Interesting outfits this year: a young woman dressed entirely in mint green (ick!), some creepy guy on stilts that had a costume on that made him look like a midget in a high chair, absolutely cute little kids in renaissance garb, and the usual loser teen whose idea of dressing up is wearing ordinary black clothes and carrying a random weapon or two. *sighs* There were several pirates for some reason this year. I'm glad to see that the comedic musical that the 'Royal Court' put on this year was better than last year's - this one was a very brief but amusing rendition of The Oddysey, or rather, The Odd-ysey. Whoever writes these things does a great job - they take lots of well-known songs and totally change the words around to make new songs that go along with the story. For example this year, there was "I want to go to Ithaca", based on "I want to live in America" from West Side Story, and there was also "Boat Sinkers", sung to the tune of "Goldfinger" (from the James Bond movie). I didn't buy anything this year. Come to think of it, I didn't last year either, though I think I should upgrade (yes, upgrade :P) my dragon pendant - it's getting rather battered and old. I've had it since 9th grade! That's all of high school, and I wear it almost every day. Maybe I should invest in a pair of 'dragon wings' and wear them around instead. :P

It's the weekend, and I'm doing homework as usual. My family's probably going to King Richard's Faire tomorrow and are going to take me along - yay! But for now, I have to do work.

I received a bid to join WILG last night. Coolness! But I don't know if I want to go through with it. McCormick IS awfully convenient - very close to the Student Center and the gym, and only a 5-10 minute walk to class. WILG is further away - it takes 5-10 minutes just to get to the Infinite Corridor, and then I have to actually get to class. Everything's a bit further away. I guess this would be easier if I lived far away, like in Next House or something. I really like the WILG gals though. I slept over last night. ^_^ That was pretty fun - we played Cranium, which is a fun but difficult game. It's like Charades, Pictionary, and Trivial Pursuit all rolled into one game. We also watched Kate & Leopold - a rather odd movie. And someone baked pumpkin pie! It was really good. :P

D'oh. Back to the psych paper now. I still have to write all of it. Aargh! 6 pages is way too long.

Aaauugh! I got my chem test back today (I just took the test yesterday - the people grade fast) and I got a 56. That's what I got on my math test. Grr! At least I'm consistent. :P Well... The class average was a 57, so I'm just a bit below tat. Plus, the people who did the grading made a scale, and 50-60 is considered okay, so I'm okay. Blah. The one bright note about this is that the correctors didn't give me full points for one problem because I did it in the wrong spot and had to draw arrows all over the place - but I got the question right! So I gave my test back and hopefully I'll get full credit for it *crosses fingers*

There is one small ray of hope in my life - today, my psych teacher was trying to cheer us up in recitation since we had just gotten our physics tests back and some people didn't do so hot. So he said something along the lines of "Look, as of this August, you were smart. MIT's water is okay, so nothing has happened between then and now to make you stupid. Unless it's the cranberry muffins." So hopefully I can pull through.

On a MUCH more positive note, I got a 98 on my physics test. It was on kinematics, which I fortunately know pretty well. Kinematics were probably the only thing I learned really well in high school. So now I like physics more than calc or chem. What a frightening thing, me actually liking physics! Still, I'm sure that sentiment will change once I've taken the second test (next Wednesday, urrgh!).

I can't believe tomorrow's Friday. I've been studying and working so much this week that all the days went by without me really noticing. At least I can sleep in! And for the weekend I just have to do a physics p-set and my psych paper. Somehow, it seems like a fairly light load. Well, I guess I can also start on my math if I feel really adventurous. ;)

Wow! I just realized that I've been at MIT for more than a month. Unbelieveable... Although it's still a couple more days until a full month of classes have gone by... Oh, whatever. I am surviviing. Somehow. :P I am longing for another suicide-prevention weekend. Now that's something you'd only find at MIT. Gotta love it! ;)

*sighs* Well, I tried to figure out how to let people add comments to this page, even though I'm sure there's all of two people reading this. Still, it'd be interesting. But I'm too busy and stupid to figure it out, so that idea's going to have to wait. Mwah. So much for being webmistress. I should do some work on that this weekend... But it's only Tuesday... Oh wait, it's Wednesday already. Darn.

Yeah, well, I think I did really well on my physics test. I'm not going to get my score back for another day or two, but we got the answers to the problems and I think I did really well! We'll see if my luck carries over to tomorrow's chem test. Erk! Actually, it's today, only a little later!

I'm having fun downloading Riverdance and Lord of the Dance music - it's a good stress-reliever. Hahaha... Nothing very interesting to write about right now. We baked cookies as a floor-wide study break. Nummy nummy! Yeah, and my little sister IMed me today and told me she got 8 chocolate bars, and she won't share any with me!! :'( Oh well... It would probably be different if I were actually at home. I will live on chocolate chip cookies instead! Ehehehe... Except I already ate mine. So much for that great idea. Okay. Enough blathering. Time to go back to work. I have to present in psychology on Thursday, and I haven't finished reading my topic chapter yet. Aargh! Oh yeah, that reminds me, I got a 9.5/10 on my first psych paper, so go me! :P Of course, I need to write the second one which is due next Thursday... and I haven't started yet! Oh well, gotta get these tests over with. I hope calc doesn't kill me again...

I remembered something I meant to write about several days ago. I have to do it now, before I fail my physics test and am too demoralized to write anything humorous.

As certain people may know, I like to make fun of RPI because their football team is called the Engineers. I mean, come on, that's just sad. Can you imagine everyone screaming, "Go Engineers!!!" And I shudder to think of what the mascot must look like. Well... the other day at a volleyball game (MIT won!), I found out the awful truth while looking at a game program. MIT's nickname is... the Engineers! Aaargh! That's awful! Here I was, coming to some school I thought was at least respectable because they wouldn't be silly enough to call themselves the Engineers. Guess again... All I can say is thank goodness that no one actually roots for the Engineers - they scream "Go Tech!" instead, which I suppose is a bit more acceptable.

So now that my bubble of innocense has been deflated, I've started looking at ways that MIT has copied/been copied by other schools. I applied to MIT and RPI and they both have the same team name. I also applied to WPI, and I realized that one of our fight chant thingies is suspiciously similar to WPI's. Now, I don't know which one came first, but one is copying off the other. Shame shame... Okay, thirdly, I didn't apply to CalTech, but I was planning on it for a good long while. And... the similarity there is that CalTech and MIT share the same mascot - the beaver, obviously because both schools are full of busy little engineers.

Those are all the similarities I could think of for the moment. Nothing Carnegie Mellon-ish yet, because MIT doesn't have a Kiltie Marching Band. Then again, you never know. With MIT having so many similarities with other schools, it may be only a matter of time before we start hearing bagpipes at the football games...

Wow... I had a weird dream last night. I was sitting in the driveway at home, trying to fix something. I heard this strange noise coming from the sky - it sounded like people talking to each other through walkie-talkies - sounds all distorted and everything. So I looked up and there were these two planes flying around over the neighborhood, scouting around. I knew that they were Iraqi planes, come to spy on us. As I watched, they flew search patterns down the road. Suddenly, five more planes appeared from the north and started attacking the two enemy planes. Hooray! The Air Force would save us! The 'bad' planes kept morphing between airplane and helicopter but eventually they were both shot down. The second one tumbeled out of the sky in flames and landed on whatever I had been fixing in the driveway. Before I could even go over and inspect the damage, a whole bunch of people in those white contamination suits ran over and started cleaning it up. Then this guy who looked like a general appeared, and since I seemed to be the only person that had witnessed this battle, I asked him what was going on and stuff. He thought I was out to steal military secrets. :P

It's true though. I really should get out more. But... I have so much work to do! I'm hoping to get my math done this weekend so I can go out and explore or something. But I'm going to have to study for tests too - I have 3 next week. Aargh!

Wow... It's been a few days. The end of the week is always so busy for me - I have Physics due on Wednesdays, Calculus due on Thursdays, and Chemistry due on Fridays! Aaugh! I thought the chem p-set wasn't too bad, but that's only because I've gotten the first half done. I hear the second half is much harder. :'(

*sighs* Well, I barely passed my first math test (by 1 point) so that's had me depressed recently. I also have 3 tests next week - physics, chemistry, and math (again!). So... hopefully I will survive.

I am stupid in math. I can't do anything. I don't have high hopes about the next test. Let's face it - I'm a SPAMIT (Stupid Person at MIT). I'm the one they let in by accident. I don't have time to study for anything because my whole time is spent trying to figure out problems that I just don't understand. Have I been overrating myself all along? Last night, I was working with some people in the Concourse lounge, and we got to talking about our math test grades. Amy got a 96, which is just incredible. So Jameel asked her what her IQ was, and she said she'd never taken an IQ test. So then he asked what she got on the SAT and she said, "I didn't do too well. I got a 1590." Cor! Ain't that a disappointment? I wonder what she thinks of me - I'm so useless.

Huh... My desk lamp died the other day, and so I've been looking all over the place for a replacement bulb. It's a halogen bulb, so it takes a bit of searching to find. My parents just sent me one from home (we have the same lamp at home) and it turns out that it's a non-standard bulb. As in, I probably have the only one in the whole world. What's up with that?! I really like the lamp, but it's kinda stupid if the bulb's irreplaceable. And my first bulb didn't even last very long - only a few weeks. Well, they say "made in China" for a reason. :P

Got fed by the friendly people at WILG again today. They had a most excellent seafood soup - lots of shrimp and scallops, yum! Then Janet dragged us (me and Amy) along to Fenway house, another Independent Living Group. We enjoyed tea and scones and got a nice house tour. The people were very friendly, but I could never see myself actually living there. They are having an anime marathon tomorrow night, but I think I'm going to be too busy doing physics to go (since I'm not doing physics right now :P). Oh well, gotta love the free food.

An interesting thing happened last night. It was raining and all, and I guess there was a bit of thunder and lightning - nothing close by though. Then suddenly, there was this HUGE clap of thunder right outside the dorm - so random! But it was even funnier because it somehow set off a car alarm... Imagine that! I wonder how long it was until someone went and turned it off... :P

Okay, okay. Enough staring at the computer screen for now. I practically spent the whole afternoon trying to do the most evil physics problems known to Man on CyberTutor. Stupid online thing. Evil evil evil! Okay, I'm sane now. Back to doing car crash problems. Fun. Er, "fun" is more like it. Oh yeah, here's a good quote from Mike at Fenway House, "Y'know, there are three things at MIT - friends, sleep and work, and you can only have two of them." How very true that is.

Rrrrr..... Since my blog died on me a second ago, I have to type this all over again. Hmm....

Yeah, so today Amy and I went looking for Japanese comic book stores. Amy researched a little bit on the web, and found two that were sorta along Mass. Ave. so we would hopefully be able to find them. Turned out that both were random Japanese food markets that had random video rentals - all in Japanese of course. So that was sad and stupid. By then, we were way past Hahvahd and stuff so we turned around and started walking back. We stopped off at Hahvahd Yahd to wander around and stuff. It was fun to see dorms made out of bricks instead of concrete. And trees and grass! We had fun wondering what it would be like if we picked up Simmons Hall and dropped it in the middle of the Yahd (Yeah, I'm determined not to pronounce/spell that place properly ever again! :P). Then we walked back to Harvard Square (Oops, broke my promise already!) and found this mall with two or three anime-related stores, so life was all good again. Didn't buy anything, naturally, since I'm such a cheapo. What would I buy anyway? Found some Slayers manga, but they were only about Lina and Naga - no Zelgadis, boo hoo. :'-(

Well, anyway, after wandering around there a bit, we started walking back home. I had wanted to stop by WILG - the Women's Independent Living Group - for dinner at 6, but by the time we got there, it was around 7:15 and starting to rain. I said we should stop by and see if they had anything left or whatever, and they were still serving! The food was really good, and the people were really nice! We even got a house tour. It's a nice place. Maybe I should think about joining it??? Hmm... Here are some facts about WILG:

- You can still join it even if you can't live there - you just have to move in when you're allowed to
- $2200 to live at WILG - this includes meals
- $100 if you don't live there - this includes 1 meal a week, social fees, etc.
- 48 people live there right now, but there's about 15 more members that live on campus.
- Most rooms are singles or doubles, but there are a few triples and quads
- All the quads are converted to triples this year - this is actually a regular occurence
- Can do laundry there - 50 cents to wash, free to dry
- Bathrooms shared between 3 and 5 people, who are in charge of keeping it clean and everything
- Dinner served 6 times a week, I believe. You get paid if you volunteer to cook.
- Also make packed lunches which you can take with you
- WILG is only a 5 or 10 minute walk away - pretty close!
- You can paint your room any way you want, pretty much.
- You can loft your bed! But of course, I'd be way too clueless to make one by myself... :(

Er, that's all I can think about right now. Sounds like it's worth it? Oh yeah, random fact of note. I met my first Lindy (that isn't me) the other night - she lives at WILG! How cool is that?

I'm enjoying my three-day suicide prevention weekend. I love how MIT gives its students random days off, presumably to de-stress. Today I'm going to indulge in some urban hiking - in search of comic book stores with my roommate. And to return the stupid light bulb that I bought that doesn't fit my lamp. Figures that I get a lamp with an irreplaceable light bulb that dies in the first few weeks of school. :(

I so wish I had a CD burner so I could get all these downloaded anime episodes off my laptop. I've got more than 5 gigs of movies here, sheesh!

Ooh! I have a job (sorta, kinda, not really). On Friday, I went and became the subject for a psychology test. It was lots of fun! I sat in front of a computer screen and pushed buttons. It was test on color recognition and memory. All good except for when my contact lens fell out and I had to spend a few minutes looking for it. The experimenter guy came in, and was wondering what I was doing. :P Oh well. I got paid $10 for it!!! Not a bad way to go. ;) I gotta find more of these tests to do...

Time for some more homework avoidance!

Yay! I got to see Lilo & Stitch last night. That is such a cute movie! It was funny - the LSC was showing it in the hall where I have math lectures. I never knew that that room had a projection screen or such good sound. I was impressed. :)

Last night marked the start of Rush 2002. Doesn't really apply to me since this is Frat and Independent Living Groups rush, and not sorority rush, and I wouldn't even be able to join if I wanted since all freshmen have to live on campus, but... it means free food! So I had steak and lobster last night. It was really good, besides the fact that my knife was totally dull and I couldn't really cut anything. We also enjoyed some acapella by a group from Tufts, and lots of cheesecake over at WILG. Then the frat next door had a roof drop - the strangest thing I have ever seen. It mostly consisted of a bunch of guys tossing stuff off a roof just to watch it fall five stories and self-destruct. They had waaay too many old computer moniters (I wonder where they got them from), also parts of a toilet, a few TVs, and printers. Oh yeah, and a few fireballs. Very weird - I'm glad I didn't have to pick up the mess. Between that and Zeta Psi's car bash (where people destroy a car), you start to think that MIT people have a lot of pent up aggression...

I've been meaning to write about this for the past few days, but I keep forgetting. But I remembered today!

Okay, so I was reading about sleep in my psychology textbook, and there was an interesting phenomenon called 'sleep paralysis', which happens when someone who's sleeping wakes up and can't move for a few seconds. When you fall asleep, your body seems to paralyze itself so you can't move around and fall off the bed or whatever, and once in a while, it carries over. I was thinking 'Wow! That's so cool! That would be interesting if it happened to me.'

So then a few days later, I was taking a nap in the Concourse lounge between classes. I was sitting in this armchair thing, and I guess I dozed off. About ten or twenty minutes later, I woke up, thinking that my friend Sarah had called my name and it was time to go to class or whatever. So my eyes opened, and I tried to sit up... but I couldn't! It was a very strange feeling - I did not feel like I was paralyzed, only that I couldn't summon up the willpower to actually move and sit up. I tried moving my arm and my leg, but nothing happened. So I concentrated on putting all my energy into moving one finger, and that did it. As soon as I managed to move my finger, I could move again! Needless to say, there was still half an hour until class, and Sarah was sound asleep too. So I went back to dozing away my time.

Wishes do come true, don't they? ;)

Yay! It's Friday! Not only that, but today's the first day of Rush. 2 weeks of hanging out at random frats that I can't join. At least there's free food! Steak and lobster, anyone?

Sad that this was all done in one day. Man, I really need to find a new skin. Er, rather, I need to finish this essay. Aargh!
Aaah! I'm awake for once! Stupid paper, I'm never going to finish it. Easier to waste time with this. :P My first college math test tomorrow. I'm gonna fail. :'( I wish I were better at Riemann Sums. Fun stuff, that.

*blinkblinks* The clock says it's only 11:30? Man, I wish. Better than 2:30, all right! Hmm... This must be based in California or something, right? Nice weather... *drools* Sunshine! Not like there isn't any here, but I'm always stuck in my room, doing homework, or just wasting time (guess which one I spend more time doing?) :P Night night!
Yay! My first entry into the world of blogs. That's a funny word, isn't it? Well, I'm all tired out from writing 'The Psychology Paper that Never Ends.' And it's only 4 pages. This is kinda a bad start, ne?
