Well, it is the beginning of term all over again and I am sitting here collecting my thoughts and listening to my brand new iPod. Now, if you know me at all, you must be thinking, Brand new? How can that be? I thought she got it for Christmas... And you would be right. However, you were probably unaware that it threw a temper tantrum last week and has refused to connect to my computer ever since. The hard drive would also spin uncontrollably but be unable to find any music (even though I had about a gigabyte of music stored on it).
After several hours (days, even!) of troubleshooting and searching internet forums and generally despairing, I took my poor ailing iPod over to the Apple store in the Galleria. I was a bit worried because I didn't have the receipt with me, and I didn't want to drag my laptop along. Fortunately, the Apple guys (at the "genius bar", haha) were really nice and totally willing to check out my iPod. After a lot of hemming and hawing (and one of them running into the top secret back room with my poor mp3 player), they concluded that my iPod was trapped in a "negative infinity loop", which was causing the hard drive to spin ineffectively, and that the only thing that could be done was to replace it. So just like that, they gave me a new iPod! Even though I didn't have a receipt or anything. I guess they also checked when I registered my iPod in the first place... Anyway, it was very convenient and I was very grateful. Although kind of sad to see my first iPod go. Even though it was all scratched up, and the sound quality made me want to kill myself sometimes. Before I left the store, I made sure to get a protective case for my new iPod. I wasn't about to let it get as scratched as my old one.
After I got back to my room, I did all the required setup, slid the iPod into its lovely new case (can't see the shiny metal anymore, but it still looks dignified), and let it charge up for a couple of hours. After that, it connected flawlessly to my computer, and I started piling music back on it. As a definitive test, I recopied one of the songs off my Amethystium CD. I've always had trouble with these songs with my old iPod - the sound quality on them was just bad. The upper registers would get all staticky and nasty and it would make me want to cry and get some other kind of mp3 player. But guess what! The song played perfectly on my new player! And the screen doesn't have the disturbing rainbowy sheen that my old one did. So I'm thinking that I must have gotten a defective iPod in the first place for Christmas. Disheartening, yes. Especially thinking back to all of the hours that I spent screaming silently at my iPod and trying not to throw it out the window. At least I have something that works now, so let's hope it stays that way. I've fallen in love with my iPod all over again, so for now it's a happy ending. I'm just praying that this thing doesn't die right before I go to Japan, since that was my primary motivation for getting an mp3 player in the first place.
And if you'll excuse me now, there's a lot of studying-to-portable-music that needs to be done. ^_^
